Skewb Ultimate

The Skewb Ultimate is a dodecahedron-shaped Skewb. It was invented in the year 2000 by Tony Fisher and was originally marketed as the "Pyraminx Ball". Fisher's original version had 12 different colors, however later versions mass-produced by Meffert's had only 6 colors, when opposite faces were colored the same. It's interesting to note that some of Meffert's early packages had a typo, spelling "Utlimate" with the t and l flipped. Since 2015, the mass-produced version of this puzzle has reverted back to 12 colors.

The mechanism behind the Skewb Ultimate is identical to the one found in the original Skewb. The main difference between them (besides the obvious shape) is that with the original Skewb, the orientation of the centers (square parts) is not visible, while on the Skewb Ultimate it is. This fact alone is enough to raise the number of possible combinations from 3,149,280 on the original Skewb to 100,776,960 on the Skewb Ultimate! Each of these combinations can be solved in 14 moves or less. In a sense, the Skewb Ultimate can be solved as a "super Skewb": Firstly, solve as a regular Skewb by solving all corners and placing the centers in their right positions; A second step is required to orient the centers correctly.

The Skewb Ultimate is not an official WCA puzzle. The unofficial record for fastest solve is 4.67 seconds set by Kenneth Miller from the United States.
